The CSU Poetry is hosting a reading with Jericho Brown and Terrance Hayes as part of their spring Writers/Reading Program.

Jericho Brown was a speechwriter to the former mayor of New Orleans, and is the author of the poetry collection Please (New Issues, 2008). His poems have appeared in such journals as Callaloo, The Iowa Review, and Jubilat. He is the recipient of a 2006 James Michener Fellowship, a Cave Canem Fellowship, and a scholarship to the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference. He is an assistant professor of English and creative writing at the University of San Diego.

Terrance Hayes is the author of three collections of poetry: Wind in a Box (Penguin, 2006), listed as one of the top 100 books in The New Yorker; Hip Logic (Penguin, 2002) a National Poetry Series selection; and Muscular Music, winner of the Kate Tufts Discover Award. His work has appeared in such journals as Poetry, The African-American Review, Harvard Review, and The Southern Review. The recipient of a Pushcart Prize, The Whiting Writers Award, and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, Hayes is an associate professor of creative writing at Carnegie Mellon University.

Book Talk on the hilarious novel, Supreme Courtship -- March 4

On March 4 Richard Fox, Head of the Popular Library at CPL, will return to lead a book discussion on Supreme Courtship by bestselling author Christopher Buckley. In this hilarious novel, the President of the United States, ticked off at the Senate for rejecting his nominees, decides to get even by nominating America’s most popular TV judge to the Supreme Court.

President Donald Vanderdamp is having a heck of a time getting his nominees onto the Supreme Court. After one nominee is rejected for insufficiently appreciating To Kill a Mockingbird, the president chooses someone so beloved by voters that the Senate won’t have the nerve to reject her – Judge Pepper Cartwright, star of the nation’s most popular reality show. Will Pepper, a vivacious Texan, survive a Senate confirmation battle? Will becoming one of the most powerful women in the world ruin her love life? Supreme Courtship is another classic Christopher Buckley comedy about the Washington institutions most deserving of ridicule (excerpt from Twelve Publishers).

Richard Fox will return on Thursday, May 7 at 3:00 to lead a book discussion on Rebel Angels by Robertson Davies. On one level, Davies’ novel is "about" four academics: Maria Theotoky, the brilliant, beautiful graduate student; her adviser, the ascetic Dr. Hollier; Simon Darcourt, the bon vivant priest; and Parlabane, once an outstanding scholar, now sycophant to his former classmates. Then there is the basic plot theme: Who will end up with the girl? Standard stuff. Yet the real focus here is on the spiritual and/or mystical personal explorations of the main characters (from Library Journal review). Rebel Angels is available for checkout at the CSU Library and on sale at Amazon.com.

Common Reading Experience Presentation--February 24 at noon in the Library

COMMON READING EXPERIENCE PRESENTATION: “THE INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE OF COMICS” -- FEBRUARY 24 AT NOON IN THE LIBRARY

Cleveland State University kicks off the spring Common Reading Experience on Tuesday, February 24 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the Library’s first floor. James Marino, Assistant Professor of English, will make a special presentation titled “The International Language of Comics” based on the book chosen for this year’s program— Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, which all first year CSU students will read as part of their orientation to University life.

The book, selected by a committee representing faculty, staff, students, and the Library, is a graphic novel that tells the story of a young girl growing up in Iran during the time of the Shah’s overthrow and the Islamic Revolution of 1979. The young heroine struggles to make sense of her faith, her politics, and her place in society as an Islamic girl amidst political upheaval and change. Written in the tradition of works such as Art Spiegelman’s Maus (1993), the book communicates powerful social and political commentary through a combination of black and white illustrations and text.

OhioLINK Update Tuesday, Feb. 17th

From OhioLINK Central:

While content in the Electronic Journal Center remains unavailable, OhioLINK is working diligently to provide access to the same content on each publisher's Web site. Available publishers' sites are listed here and we continue to update this list as needed. Project Muse has been added to the list today and their content is now available. Links to the listed publisher sites work for both on and off campus users.

Over the weekend OhioLINK staff were able to restore EJC content from 2008-2009 for most publishers, except Elsevier, Springer and Blackwell. We continue to work to restore the remaining EJC content as quickly as possible, but do not have all the reload processes in place yet nor the experience to provide a useful time line for full EJC restoration. We hope to be able to share a schedule in the near future.

Since we have a growing body of available content, we restored the alphabetical title links on the EJC home page. These links show only those journals that are currently available, for other journals or issues please continue to visit the publishers' sites.

All OhioLINK resources, except the EJC, have been restored following the hardware upgrade completed Tuesday. This includes all Digital Resource Commons instances. Content submissions are again being accepted for the DRC, the Electronic Theses and Dissertations Center and the Finding Aid Repository (EAD).

OhioLINK Update

Following Tuesday's hardware upgrade at OhioLINK central, the following services are now fully restored:

• Library Catalog
• Electronic Journal Center redirect page (redirects to publisher sites)
• Digital Media Center (all content is available)
• OSearch databases
• Electronic Theses and Dissertation Center
• Quick Search @ OhioLINK
• OhioLINK Web site
• Electronic Books Center
• EAD Finding Aid Creation Tool and Repository
• Landsat7 Satellite Images

OhioLINK is still working on restoration of the Digital Resource Commons, and the Electronic Journal Center.

While content in the EJC remains unavailable, OhioLINK is working to provide access to the same content on each publisher's Web site. The publishers are being very supportive and are working hard to set up accounts for all OhioLINK members.

As of Feb. 10th, the links to the majority of the publisher sites listed here work for both on and off campus users.

All OhioLINK member schools should now have access to all Elsevier journals via their Science Direct platform. Those of you who had previous limited access on Science Direct may now be asked to make a choice when you arrive at their site between your former account and a new trial account that provides you with access to the complete list of OhioLINK titles.

OhioLINK will continue to update the EJC home page as they make more progress towards complete access on publisher Web sites.

All OhioLINK resources going offline at noon today, Tuesday Feb. 10th

All OhioLINK resources, except for the OhioLINK Library Catalog, will go offline at noon today, Tuesday Feb. 10th. The OhioLINK Web site will also be down during this period. Resources will come back online in stages, and OhioLINK estimates that it may take up to an hour for all resources to come back up.

OhioLINK apologizes for the inconvenience and the late notice of this outage, but it is necessary to fix the cause of the massive hardware failure that took place on February 4. This outage will not address the EJC, that is a separate problem which they continue to work on.

Join us in the Library on Thursday, February 12, 2009 from noon to 1:00 on the first floor to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and to recognize the “Year of Darwin.” Dean Bette Bonder of the College of Science will initiate the celebration.

Darwin Day is a global celebration of the discoveries and life of Charles Darwin, the man who first described biological evolution via natural selection with scientific rigor. Darwin Day also recognizes the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge, acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity, has contributed to the advancement of humanity.
