Call for Scholarly and Artistic Works

CSU Faculty,Staff and Emeriti:
On Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 3:00 the Friends of the Michael Schwartz Library will host its 21st Annual Scholars and Artists Reception recognizing faculty, staff, and emeriti creativity. The Friends of the Library will exhibit materials such as books, scholarly papers, art, music, web sites, or similar works that University faculty, staff, and emeriti have published in the past year.

This year, the guest of honor will be Dr. Michael Schwartz, President Emeritus. The Friends will honor him in celebration and recognition of the Library’s new name. You will hear more about this event soon, but at this time, the Friends of the Library are urging that you begin sending materials you have published (authored or co-authored) in the past year. In order to have your submission included in the Scholars and Artists bibliography, please complete the appropriate information on the submission form on the opposite page and send it with each submission by Thursday, November 5, 2009 (5:00 p.m.).

Please note that your submissions will be on display on the first floor of the Library for one week. Books and other valuable materials will be in a secure display case. However, journal articles will be displayed on tables, so if you are submitting an article, please send only a copy of the article and not the entire journal. Your works will be returned to you within a few weeks after the reception unless you indicate otherwise.

Calling All OhioLINK Fans: OhioLINK Video Contest Deadline Extended to February 11!

Are you the biggest OhioLINK fan? Show us what OhioLINK means to you, how it has helped you, or how you'd explain OhioLINK to your peers in a short (five minutes or less) video and you could win a new digital video camera or 160 GB iPod classic. Your video can be serious or silly, but you need to hurry, entries to the This Is MY OhioLINK Video Contest must be submitted by February 11.

Current students, faculty and staff members at all 87 OhioLINK member institutions are welcome to submit one or more videos. Entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on February 11, 2008. A panel of judges will narrow the entries to three finalists, and then your votes will determine the grand prize winner and runner up. The grand prize winner will receive his/her choice of a digital video camera or a new 160 GB iPod classic and the runner up will receive the remaining prize.

Celebrate Occupational Therapy Month!

Occupational Therapy (OT) is an allied health profession focused on improving a person's ability to participate in the everyday activities of living at home, at school, at work, or at play. Birth defects, injuries, illnesses, diseases, and the effects of aging can cause people of all ages to have difficulty performing everyday activities like personal self-care, playing, homemaking, and working. Occupational Therapists offer creative solutions to help these adults and children so they can participate more fully in the daily activities that are meaningful to them. OT assists people in developing the "skills for the job of living" necessary for independent and satisfying lives.

Changes to OhioLINK Databases

In July and August, the CSU libraries will experience a significant realignment of research databases provided by OhioLINK. We will be losing access to several databases, but simultaneously gaining access to a sizable list of titles we did not previously have. For some of those titles lost, new titles from a different vendor are available and will be provided. For others, there is no specific substitute. In the case of a few discontinued databases, we will retain access to the previous years’ files, to which we had subscribed. Most of the cancellations will take effect on August 1, 2006. The libraries will make every effort to provide a smooth transition for students, faculty and staff.

Changes to some OhioLINK databases

Many OhioLINK library databases have changed their search interface from Dataware to the new OSearch. While the basic functionality of OSearch remains the same, improvements have been made, the most noticeable of which is a dramatically simplified default view. On the Library’s homepage, the terminology has been simplified by changing the category “Indexes and Abstract” to the broader “Research Databases.”

The Library, located in Rhodes Tower, has many of the current popular fiction and non-fiction books, courtesy of the Cleveland Public Library, available for checkout. In a large university library, browsing the shelves to locate a good book to read just for pleasure can be overwhelming. To help students identify well written, quality literature, CSU librarians created the Outstanding Book Collection. This unique collection was designed to foster a love of reading and encourage intellectual development among students. Conveniently located on the first floor of the Library near the entrance, this collection features both classic titles and contemporary award winners. The collection is small enough for casual browsing but offers an intriguing selection of fiction and nonfiction titles that will capture students’ imaginations and take them to new worlds.

Now on display on the first floor of the Library is a wide variety of items relating to the Terminal Tower. Included in the display are large posters depicting the construction of the Tower, books about the Tower, and a replica of the Tower made up entirely of legos.

Children of Abraham Exhibit, Lectures, and Film Discussions

“The Children of Abraham,” an Ohio Humanities Council Exhibit is on display in the Library through February 13, 2009. The colorful and dramatic 14 –panel exhibit includes “When & Were did the Abrahamic Religions Originate?,” “How & By Whom did the Abrahamic Religions Originate?,” “The Holy Texts of Judaism,” “ The Holy Texts of Christianity” and “The Holy Texts of Islam.” The panels also include information about the core and common beliefs of these 3 religions. Cleveland Memory Exhibit at Cuyahoga County Fair

This year's Cuyahoga County Fair (Monday, Aug. 7 - Sunday, Aug. 13) will feature an exhibit on Memories of Cleveland.

In collaboration with local businesses, the Library has prepared an impressive display of approximately 100 historical photographs and artifacts depicting various aspects of Cleveland history. The photos feature famous Clevelanders from the worlds of sports, politics, and entertainment, as well as ordinary Clevelanders doing interesting things.

The display will also include several oversized panels depicting the construction of the Terminal Tower building at various stages of completion.

Library staff will be on hand at all times to answer questions about the exhibit in particular and about the Library in general. They will also encourage fairgoers to tell about their own favorite Cleveland memories by making brief voice recordings, some of which will later be available at the Cleveland Memory website.

Also, the Library and the County Fair have put together an online photograph contest on the Flickr website , where folks can enter photos to win a digital camera. It is not necessary to attend the Fair in order to win. Click here for details.

Cleveland Memory Featured in the Sun Press

The Cleveland Memory Project's recent partnership with Cleveland Heights/University Heights to digitize some 700 of their historic images and make them available on the Web via the CMP website is the subject of an article in the March 12th issue of the Sun Press.

The resulting website, Cleveland Heights & University Heights, Ohio: A Collection of Historic Images, debuted last fall with plans to add several hundred more images this spring.

Cleveland Memory News: 2 New Oral Histories Just Added to Ethnic Women of Cleveland

Two new oral histories have just been added to the Cleveland Memory Project's Ethnic Women of Cleveland series.

You can now listen to Ann Hankavich talk about her early childhood in the Urkaine, her emigration to Canada and her life in Cleveland after marrying her husband.

Ilona Palasic's story is a little different. Growing up as a second generation American in Cleveland, she speaks about growing up in the Hungarian neighborhood on Buckeye Road.

Cleveland Memory Pays Tribute to Herb Score, 1933-2008

Herb Score pitched for the Cleveland Indians from 1955 to 1959, twice making the American League All-Star team and leading the league in strikeouts.

After his playing days were over, Score was a member of the Indians broadcasting team from 1964 until his retirement in 1997. Herb Score will be remembered, and fondly, as long as there are baseball fans in Cleveland.

Cleveland Memory's “Crime Scene, Cleveland” Offers a Glimpse at Some of Cleveland's More Sensationalized Murders

Perhaps it is not one of the most pleasant topics, but recent events have put murder in Cleveland into the news. Those interested in learning more about two of Cleveland's more sensationalized murders, the Torso Murders and the Sheppard Murder Case, can find photos and information about them in Cleveland Memory's “Crime Scene, Cleveland”.

The perpetrator of the Kingsbury Run "Torso Murders" took the lives of 12 victims between September 1935 and August 1938 and was never found, but the murders stopped after Cleveland Safety Director, Eliot Ness, and 63 men burned down the Kingsbury Run shantytowns. A film about these murders and Eliot Ness' involvement in the investigation is to be the subject of a film, "Ness", which is currently in development and is to be directed by William Fincher who covered similar subject matter in his films "Se7ven" and "Zodiac".

The murder of Marilyn Sheppard on July 4, 1954 and the subsequent trials of her husband, Samuel Sheppard, for the murder sparked a media frenzy at the time and later inspired a television series, The Fugitive, and a feature film of the same name.

Cleveland Public Library, Issue 2 on March 4 Ballot

Cleveland Public Libray partners with the CSU Library to provide leisure reading material for faculty and students. Cleveland Public Library is putting a replacement Levy (Issue 2) on the ballot in the Primary Election to be held on March 4, 2008. This is not a new tax and its passage is critical to maintaining current library service.

Cleveland State University kicked off the 2007 Common Reading Experience on Tuesday, October 16 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the Library’s first floor. Dr. Bette Bonder, College of Science Dean, made a presentation titled “Understanding Autism,” based on the book chosen for this year’s pilot program—Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, whose main character is a mathematically-gifted autistic teenager.

Cleveland State University first year students enrolled in Introduction to University Life will join in this common reading experience with thousands of other American college students this fall. The goal of the common reading program is to create a shared learning experience that fosters student engagement, retention, and personal development beyond the classroom.

A committee of faculty, librarians, and administrators chose The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time based on its relationship to issues and topics that cut across different disciplines (Special Education, Communication, Diversity, Psychology, Art, Mathematics, Science, Speech and Language, Social Work, etc.) as well as issues of individual and family experiences. Participation in this common reading experience is not limited to just the Introduction to University Life students. All members of the University community are encouraged to read the book and participate in activities including film screenings, brown bag faculty speakers series, and more. Also, visit the Common Reading Experience display on the Library's first floor, through October.

Common Reading Experience Continues

Cleveland State University Library will host the Common Reading Brown Bag Speaker Series on March 20, March 25, and April 3. The talks are based on the book chosen for this Common Reading pilot program—Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, whose main character is a mathematically-gifted autistic teenager.

If you know anyone affected by autism or that has a disability you’ll want to attend the following presentations, which will be held from noon – 1:00 p.m. on the Library’s first floor, near RT 103. The talks are open to all CSU faculty, staff, and students and to the Cleveland Community.

Tuesday, March 25, 2008—Discussing Libbi Chilia’s new book Imagine… Amazing Me! will be Dr. Anthony Menendez, Assistant Professor, Teacher Education and the author herself—Libbi Chilia, a CSU Graduate Student in Special Education. Find out how her book, inspired by her daughter who has a limb deficiency, will disband any misconceptions about people with disabilities. There will be a book signing after the presentation (books can be purchased after the presentation).

Thursday, April 3, 2008—Dr. Colleen McMahon, Associate Professor, Psychology, will present "Friendships and Autism: A Look at the Social Lives of People with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Cleveland State University presents its final spring Common Reading Experience on Tuesday, April 7 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the Library’s first floor. Julia Shearson, Executive Director, Council on American-Islamic Relations, Cleveland, will make a special presentation titled “Islam and Muslims: Dispelling Stereotypes” based on the book chosen for this year’s program— Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, which all first year CSU students will read as part of their orientation to University life.

The book, selected by a committee representing faculty, staff, students, and the Library, is a graphic novel that tells the story of a young girl growing up in Iran during the time of the Shah’s overthrow and the Islamic Revolution of 1979. The young heroine struggles to make sense of her faith, her politics, and her place in society as an Islamic girl amidst political upheaval and change. Written in the tradition of works such as Art Spiegelman’s Maus (1993), the book communicates powerful social and political commentary through a combination of black and white illustrations and text.

All CSU faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend.

Common Reading Experience Presentation: The Science Behind the Beginning of the Nuclear Age

Cleveland State University continues its Common Reading Experience on Tuesday, October 27 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the Library’s first floor. Petur Fodor, Professor, Physics Department, as part of the Speaker Series will make a special presentation titled “The Science behind the Beginning of the Nuclear Age” based on the book chosen for this year’s program— Michael Frayn’s Copenhagen, which all first year CSU students will read as part of their orientation to University life.

Copenhagen, selected by a committee representing faculty, staff, students, and the Library is a Tony Award-winning play that soars at the intersection of science and art. It is an explosive re-imagining of the mysterious wartime meeting between two Nobel laureates to discuss the atomic bomb.

Michael Frayn shows us that these men were passionate, philosophical, and all too human, even though one of the three historical figures in his drama, Werner Heisenberg, was the head of the Nazis' effort to develop a nuclear weapon. The play's other two characters, the Danish physicist Niels Bohr and his wife, Margrethe, are involved with Heisenberg in an after-death analysis of an actual meeting that has long puzzled historians.

All CSU faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend all Common Reading Experience Events.

Concert at CPL

On March 7th, 2009 at 2pm the Fine Arts Department will present Javier González, piano (faculty member at The Beck Center and Baldwin Wallace Conservatory) and Gabriela Martínez, soprano (member of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus) performing music from Spain and Latin America.

The recital will be on the 3rd floor lobby of Main Library (325 Superior Ave., Cleveland, Ohio, 44114).

Constitution Day events

Constitution Day is celebrated every September 17 to commemorate the signing of the United States Constitution on that date back in 1787 in the State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention.

Special events and activities are planned for the University’s celebration of the U.S. Constitution, including:

* An online contest in which students can win an iPod mini, jump drive, $50 bookstore gift certificate, and five $5 copy cards. Visit http://www.ulib.csuohio.edu/constitution/quiz to take the quiz.
* Free screening of films with a Revolutionary War or Constitutional theme in the library’s viewing room (RT 325) on Tuesday, Sept. 13 and Thursday, Sept. 15 from noon to 2 p.m., and a live broadcast from the National Archives, “Free Speech in the Digital Age,” on Friday, Sept. 16 at 1:30 p.m. in the new Library Connection Lounge on the first floor.

Course Development Small Grants for Information Literacy Winners Announced

The University Library received 6 applications for the 2008 Course Development Small Grants program, designed to support faculty members in their efforts to integrate information literacy instruction into teaching and assignments. The following individuals will be awarded $800 each for 2008:

Course Development Small Grants For Information Literacy--Winners Announced

The University Library received 13 applications for the 2007 Course Development Small Grants program designed to support faculty members in their efforts to integrate information literacy instruction into teaching and assignments. As announced, only three grants were available for 2007 (with only one available per college). Once again, however, many of the proposals were outstanding. In addition to the three winning proposals, the Interim Dean of the Graduate College also chose to fund a proposal supporting the Graduate College’s program. The following three individuals will be awarded $1,000 Course Development Small Grants for Information Literacy by the Library for 2007.

• Petru S. Fodor, Physics (College of Science)
• Oksun Lee, Art Department (College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences)
• Wenbing Zhao, Electrical and Computer Engineering (College of Engineering)

The College of Graduate Studies will also fund a Course Development Small Grant for Information Literacy. The recipient of this grant is:

• Paul Lin, Department of Mechanical Engineering (College of Engineering)

Three other proposals were of such outstanding merit that the review panel encouraged the Library Director to acknowledge them with a partial award.

These individuals are:

The University library received 11 applications for the 2006 Course Development Small Grants program designed to support faculty members in their efforts to integrate information literacy instruction into teaching and assignments. Although originally only three grants were announced (with no more than one per college), there were such excellent proposals from five colleges that the library has decided to fund all five. CSU Library Student Assistant on Front Page

Samarth Mehta, a CSU Library Student Assistant who works in Systems, made the Plain Dealer's front page when he and other Indian students performed the Bhangra, a traditional dance from Punjab in northern India, as part of the International Day festivities on November 15th. The photo appears in the November 16th issue.

The caption in the Plain Dealer reads:

"The Friends of India dance team fused traditional Indian music and dance and contemporary music in their fusion dance routine Wednesday at Cleveland State University. It was all part of CSU’s International Day. Students from many countries including Albania, Germany, Hungary, India, Japan, Sweden and Turkey participated in the event, which also included ethnic food and cultural exchanges."

CSU Library Student Assistants Appear on Page 1 of the PD Metro Section

CSU Library Student Assistants Samarth Mehta and Uchit Shah made the front page of the Metro section in the November 15th issue of the Plain Dealer.

Samarth, who works in Library Systems, and Uchit, who works in the Library Computing Learning Center, are both members of the “Friends of India” dance troop, who performed on Wednesday, Nov. 14th as part of the International Day 2007 festivities on campus.

The caption for the photo reads:

“Friends of India” dancers cheer on their fellow performers Wednesday at Cleveland State University's University Center. The dancers, all CSU students, were taking part in International Day 2007, a festival that celebrated the university's cultural diversity. CSU has more than 800 students from 74 countries this year...
