Highlights From Friends of the Library Book Talk

CSU President Michael Schwartz and CSU Professor of Public Administration and Urban Studies William Bowen discussed their thought-provoking and relevant new book, The Chief Purpose of Universities: Academic Discourse and the Diversity of Ideas (Edwin Mellen Press, 2005) at a special Library program on Thursday, September 22 sponsored by the Friends of the CSU Library.

The program, moderated by Friends of the Library President and CSU History Professor Emeritus, William I. Shorrock, began with a brief overview by the authors of their book in which they discussed their belief that "the highest priority within universities is to create, preserve, transmit, and find new applications of knowledge to extend free choice through society" ("Reference & Research Book News", May 2005, p. 220). They went on to outline briefly what they contend to be the enemies of universities and to explain the seven requisites for success. The authors then fielded questions from CSU faculty, staff and students in attendance. A brief reception followed.

Note: Two copies of the book are available on reserve at the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the University Library.

Hindu and Culture and Dharmic Traditions Exhibit on display now at the Library

The Exhibition on Hindu and Culture and Dharmic Traditions is on display now at the Library. This exhibition is part of the India Experience display and offers a sample of the vast Hindu cultural heritage and the Dharmic traditions of India. There are 30 posters on various themes such as Temples, Ancient Roots and Architecture, Yoga and Ayurveda, Cosmic Rhythm, Divine Nature and more. This exhibit is part of a traveling exhibit and has been displayed in at least 8 state houses throughout the United States. For more information, visit http://www.hssus.org/content/view/144/108. The India Experience display can be viewed during regular Library hours through the month of April and is located on the first floor of the Library.

Holiday Concerts at Cleveland Public Library

Cleveland Public Library will be hosting several concerts throughout the holiday season.

On Friday, December 8th, the Cleveland Public Library Holiday chorus will be performing at 12 noon in the Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium at Superior Avenue and W. 6th St.

The Isis String Quartet from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music will perform classical works and selections from the music of the holiday season at Cleveland Public Library on Saturday, December 9 at 3:00 p.m. in the 2nd floor lobby of the Main Building, located at 325 Superior Avenue. Honoring Preston White's Memory

Colleagues and friends of Preston White of the Library are invited to attend a gathering on Thursday, December 6 at noon in RT 503. Preston, Coordinator of the Library Computer Learning Center, passed away unexpectedly in October. Those in attendance will be asked to help determine how to best honor his memory.

Preston began his career at the University in 1983 as a student employee. In 1986 he began working as a Library Media Technical Assistant 1 in the Law Library. He then joined the University Library in 1992 as the Current Periodicals/Microforms Unit Coordinator. He served the Library in various capacities over his 14-year career here. Most notably, he was integral in establishing and maintaining two cutting-edge labs in the Library--the Adaptive Technology Lab for students with disabilities and the Library Computer Learning Center for training students in computer software use.

Preston will always be remembered for his exemplary customer service and unwavering dedication to student learning.

A two-time alumnus, he received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in June 1992 and his Master of Arts in History in December 2000.

How has the library changed your life?

It’s long been acknowledged that libraries have the power to transform lives. Through May 10, Woman’s Day magazine wants to hear about it.

As part of its latest editorial initiative, Woman’s Day magazine is collecting stories on how the library has changed its readers’ lives. The magazine announced the initiative in its March 7 issue, which reached subscribers in mid-February. In the issue, it declares that "libraries are magical places" and asks readers to submit their stories in 700 words or less. Stories can be sent to womansday@ala.org from now until May 10, 2006, when the promotion closes.

The initiative is part of ALA and Woman's Day's Put it in Writing @ your library® program.

HUGE Record Sale

The Friends of the Cleveland State University Library will hold an amazing vinyl record sale on Thursday, December 1, 2005 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Browse through more than 6,000 LPs, mostly classical, that date from the mid-1950s to the mid-1980s. Major labels include Mercury Living Presence, RCA Red Seal (Shaded Dogs), Columbia Masterworks, and Philips. Records will sell for $1 each. The sale will be located on the first floor of the Library, near the Circulation Desk.
