National Library Week

National Library Week, April 10-16, is a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers to their schools, campuses and communities. As part of this annual event, the Cleveland State University Library will be hosting the following programs and events:

Sunday, April 10 through Saturday, April 16: Food for Fines
Have a Library fine? Reduce your fine while helping the Cleveland Foodbank by donating nonperishable food items. For every item donated, $1 of your fine will be eliminated - up to $20. Drop items off at the first floor circulation desk.

Monday, April 11, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Friends of the Library Book Sale
Help support the Friends of the Cleveland State Library and find some great books at great prices. Paperbacks will be on sale for 50 cents each or three for $1. Hardbacks will be $1 each or three for $2. Fenn College, a just-published book that depicts, through photos, the Fenn campus and its students, faculty and staff, will be on sale this day only for a special price of $15 – nearly $5 off the retail price!

Tuesday, April 12: National Library Worker’s Day
Stop by the University Library and tell your favorite librarian or staff member how much you appreciate what they do.

Wednesday, April 13, 2 p.m.: Euclid Corridor Transportation Project Presentation
Learn about the $168 million transit improvement project stretching from Public Square to East Cleveland with Dr. Mark Souther, assistant professor of history. Learn how Cleveland State faculty and students are working to capture, preserve and archive the stories of Euclid Avenue neighborhoods and the people that live within them through audio-based oral histories. A small reception will follow the presentation.

Thursday, April 14, noon: Landscapes of Memory: The Cleveland Cultural Gardens
Dr. Mark Tebeau, associate professor of history, will discuss the history behind the Cultural Gardens and how he, in collaboration with students, teachers and colleagues, has created an e-journal dedicated to the Cultural Gardens that includes sound portraits, oral histories, research essays, and historical images. Following the presentation, sample authentic foods from cultures represented by the gardens.

All events will take place near the first-floor Circulation Desk of the University Library in Rhodes Tower. There will be daily drawings for prizes such as Cleveland Indians tickets, Playhouse Square tickets, movie passes and more. Stop by to sign up for your chance to win.

National Library Week 2005 marks the fifth year of The Campaign for America’s Libraries, a multi-year public education campaign sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country.

Need help with your math homework? Come to the Library!

Tutors from the EPIC/PEP program are available on the fourth floor of the Library (outside RT 402) to help students with their math and science classes (particularly those involving algebra and calculus).

The tutors are available:
Monday 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Wednesday 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Thursday 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

New Arabic materials from Cleveland Public Library

In support of the new Middle East Studies program at Cleveland State, the Library has recieved materials from Cleveland Public Library all written in Arabic. The materials include fiction, non-fiction, media items and periodicals. The items are located on the first floor of the Library near the display area. These materials may be checked out with a CPL greater access card at the CPL@CSU self check out machine. If you do not have a greater access card, please apply for one at the User Services Desk.

New café area on the 5th floor

Need a quiet place to relax, read a book, or enjoy a cup of coffee? Faculty, students, and staff are invited to come up to the Library’s fifth floor stairway landing to find a new place to take a break or study. This new area features café style tables and chairs where patrons can visit with friends, get lost in a new book, or just unwind.

New database: the Inspec Archive

The library has added a new database, the Inspec Archive, which contains scientific and technical literature in physics, electrical engineering, electronics, communications, control engineering, computers, computing, information technology, and manufacturing and production engineering, dating from 1898 to 1968. From the library's home page, follow the link to Indexes and Abstracts, then choose Inspec Archive.

New Digital Videos Covering Art, Film & History

OhioLINK’s Digital Video Collection now offers 1,960+ digital, educational videos that you can show in class, link to from course pages and utilize for research. The new videos, which were purchased from Ambrose Video Publishing, cover a variety of subjects, from art to film to history.

Some of the newest digital videos include:

* Bosch (Art of the Netherlands series)
* 18th Century Turning Points in U.S. History: 1767-1776 (18th Century Turning Points in U.S. History series)
* Michelangelo (Great Artists series)
* 19th Century Turning Points in U.S. History: 1866-1870 (19th Century Turning Points in U.S. History series)
* Waiting for Godot (Beckett on Film series)

The OhioLINK Digital Video Collection is available to all students, faculty members and staff at OhioLINK member institutions. The videos are available for viewing and downloading (for temporary storage only). Free software from RealNetworks is needed to view these videos. The current version of this software, called "RealPlayer," is available.

New EJC Interface Coming January 8

The OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center will have a new interface for the New Year beginning January 8, 2007. Faculty, students, staff and librarians at OhioLINK member institutions can catch a sneak peek of the new interface now.

The new interface will look familiar to current EJC users, but it will also offer better performance and more functionality. New features include:

• My Articles – A function of My EJC, the My Articles features allows you to create and save your favorite articles for easy reference later.
• Password retrieval – In the old interface forgotten passwords were irretrievable. Now you can automatically generate a new one.
• Find similar articles in the EJC with just one click.
• Collapsible/Expandable panels allow for faster browsing of titles with extensive numbers of issues or long back files.
• Quick links to the complete article from both the issue and article level page helps you get the full-text article more quickly.

These oldie-but-goodie features are still available and worth trying out if you haven’t already:

• Journal alerts – Get new issue alerts via RSS feed or go to My EJC and create an account to create a list of favorite journals and set up e-mail notifications.
• My Searches – Put your research on autopilot. Save your searches and set times for the system to automatically execute them and e-mail you the results.

It will be possible to migrate your saved searches from the old system to the new one.

New Friends of the Library President Named

Dr. Michael Wells, Associate Professor in the Department of Urban Studies, has been named President of the Friends of the Cleveland State University Library. He will succeed Dr. William Shorrock, who served as president from April 2005 until his passing in November. Glenda Thornton, Director of the Library, anticipates that the Friends will continue to grow and offer exciting programs to the CSU community and beyond under Dr. Wells’ leadership.

Wells started his career at Cleveland State in 1977 as an Assistant Director of Admissions. Since then he has been Assistant Dean of the Graduate College, Assistant/Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Associate Dean of the Division of Continuing Education. He was Director of Undergraduate Programs for the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs, where he is currently an Associate Professor. At the state level, Wells chaired the Ohio Historic Preservation Advisory Board. Locally he is on the board of trustees of the Cleveland Rotary Club and President of Support to At Risk Teens, a Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry. He is the author of several single and multi authored articles. He looks forward to the Friends of the Library presidency.

New in Cleveland Memory — Each in Their Own Voice: African-American Artists in Cleveland, 1970-2005

The Michael Schwartz Library has partnered with the Cleveland State University History Department and Art Gallery to produce this online version of the exhibition, Each in Their Own Voice: African-American Artists in Cleveland, 1970-2005 as part of a new collection in Cleveland Memory.

The exhibition ran at the Art Gallery from January 23 to March 7, 2009 and featured work by 24 artists working in a wide range of media including film. Part of the preparation for the exhibition included interviews with each artist recorded as oral histories by the Cleveland State University History Department. Excerpts from these interviews have been made available along with the artists' work as well as portraits of most of the featured artists in this online representation of the original exhibition.

Listen and see for yourself what these talented artists have to say through their interviews and their art.

New in Cleveland Memory — Euclid Beach and the Humphrey Glass Negative Collection

Guests at Euclid Beach Park (carousel in background).

Revisit Euclid Beach Park, one of Cleveland's more successful and longer-lived amusement parks and get a glimpse into the lives of the Humphrey Family, owners and operators of the park from 1901 until its final season in 1969.

This new exhibit in Cleveland Memory features images from the Cleveland Press and Postcards of Cleveland Collections as well as some newly added photos from theHumphrey Glass Negative Collection. The Humphrey Glass Negative Collection in Special Collections at the Michael Schwartz Library is a set of 700 glass negatives documenting the lives and interests of Euclid Beach Park owners, the Humphrey Family, during the early part of the 20th century. Images in the Humphrey collection not only depict Euclid Beach Park, but also include Humphrey family and friends, heroes of early aviation such as Glen Curtiss and Harry Atwood, and other amusement parks of the time, most notably Coney Island.

So take a step back in time when the sound of Laughing Sal, the roar of wooden coasters, the scent of Humphrey popcorn and the thrill of an endless summer filled the air at Euclid Beach Park.

New in Cleveland Memory — The Cleveland Group Plan of 1903

The Group Plan of 1903, which called for the construction of the Mall and surrounding buildings downtown, is the earliest and most fully realized plan for a major city outside of Washington, D.C. It is of current interest because of plans to build a medical mart on the west side of the Mall and has also been the subject of a recent article in the Plain Dealer.

In addition to the Mall, the final design by Daniel H. Burnham, Arnold W. Brunner, and John M. Carrere included the Federal Building, the Cuyahoga County Courthouse, Cleveland City Hall, Public Auditorium/Music Hall, the Cleveland Board of Education, and the Cleveland Public Library. A Union Terminal at the north end of the Mall along Lake Erie was also planned, but never built.

New in Cleveland Memory! “Feeding Cleveland: Urban Agriculture”

The Cleveland Memory Project has just added a new web exhibit!

Dedicated to the urban gardeners and farmers of Cleveland, Feeding Cleveland: Urban Agriculture is a joyous look at those who “toil in the soil” — from the relief workers during the Great Depression, citizens in their victory gardens during WWII and children in school-sponsored horticulture programs, to the modern-day enthusiasts and entrepreneurs in community and market gardens.

New in Cleveland Memory! “The Photograph Albums of Glenallen”

Glenallen, also known as Glen Allen, was the Cleveland Heights estate of Elisabeth Severance Allen Prentiss built in 1914. Known for its landscaping, which included a Japanese Garden with a goldfish pond and a Korean Pavilion shipped directly from Korea, the interior of the estate featured inlaid oak floors, marble fireplaces, fine art, and a carved mahogany woodwork.

See gracious living at its finest captured by photographer Clifford Norton in this digital representation of this rare twin-volume book of hand-mounted photographs, The Photograph Albums of Glenallen.

New Interfaces Launched for Scholarly & Reference and Literature E-Book Collections

A newly upgraded version of the OhioLINK Electronic Book Center software will go live on Monday, June 1, 2009. This process involves a DNS change which may take up to 24 hours to been seen by everyone.

While the main OhioLINK E-Book Center page found at http://ebooks.ohiolink.edu will not change, the upgrade allows for several improvements to the software that runs the Scholarly & Reference and American & English Literature Collections, including:

* The ability to narrow search results by subject (Scholarly & Reference Books Collection only) and date (both collections)
* The ability to limit advanced searches by a date range or single year
* Improved navigation and browse capabilities
* Persistent links for individual books
* The ability to e-mail title, date and URL of saved records

New Outdoor Ice Rink in University Circle Prompts Look at Ice Skating Images in Cleveland Memory

According to a recent Plain Dealer article, “Outdoor ice skating returns to University Circle ”, but in this case it's on synthetic ice.

New resource allows users to analyze countries and regions online

World Data Analyst Online is a resource from Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc. that lets users analyze countries and regions at a glance. It offers detailed statistical comparisons of countries around the world, using both the most recent statistics and historical figures. Users can create tables, charts, and even export the information to a spreadsheet for printing and data crunching. Highlights include: country snapshots, comparative statistics, historical statistics, and ranked statistics.

New Resource for Theatre & Dance Research

The International Bibliography of Theatre & Dance (IBTD), is now available to all students, faculty and staff at OhioLINK institutions. IBTD is an index to journal articles, books, book articles and dissertation abstracts on all aspects of theatre and performance in 126 countries.

IBTD is available to OhioLINK users through 2006 as a one-year trial.

Newly Cataloged Balkan Slavic Music Tapes

Interested in Slavic heritage and culture? Did you ever travel with, or know someone who participated in, a “junior tammy” – a tamburitza orchestra – as a teenager?

At the Multimedia Services Desk on the third floor, you can now listen to live recordings of tamburitza concerts, as well as traditional folk instruments, by American Balkan Slavic groups ranging from the upper Midwest to Canada.

These recordings were made for the Greater Cleveland Ethnographic Museum in the 1980’s on a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Ethnomusicologist Walt Mahovlich, founder of the eastern European music band Harmonia, and folklorist Walter March, used the recordings to make the UNESCO-award-winning album “Nova Domovina: Balkan Slavic Music of the Industrial Midwest.”
