Searching for Theses and Dissertations Just Got a Little Easier

The OhioLINK Electronic Theses and Dissertations Center has been updated with a new look and a worldwide ETD search.

Save time with the new worldwide ETD search by using a single search to find ETDs from a global index of freely available electronic theses and dissertations provided by major ETD collections around the world. This index allows you to search for information about each ETD, including authors, titles, and abstracts. It does not search the full text of the ETDs.

The OhioLINK Electronic Theses and Dissertations Center is a free, online database of more than 14,600 theses, dissertations and honors theses from 21 participating member colleges and universities. The full text is freely available for 90% of the theses and dissertations in the ETD Center.

Ohio’s colleges and universities are invited to join the OhioLINK ETD Center and have their graduate students submit their theses and dissertations electronically. Visit the FAQ to find out more about the ETD Center and how interested institutions may join.

Picnicking at North Chagrin Reservation, awaiting the return of the buzzards at Hinkley Reservation, tobogganing down the slide at the Mill Stream Run Reservation, horseback riding at Big Creek... most of us can reminisce of time well-spent at one of Cleveland's sixteen Metroparks.

Cleveland Memory revisits some of those experiences with its new collection of images, “The Photographs of the Cleveland Metroparks,” over 100 photos representing 9 of Cleveland's Metroparks, Ohio's oldest park district.

Roy Grove was a cartoonist for the news syndicate Newspaper Enterprise Association from 1917 through the mid-1920's. Covering Europe during World War I, he captured the every-day life of the American soldier away from home for readers of NEA's 326 daily newspapers in the United States, including the Cleveland Press. After the war, Grove went on to cover sports for the same news syndicate.

The Roy Grove Cartoon Collection, donated to Special Collections in the Cleveland State University Library by the Gardner family, contains 64 images of cartoons drawn by Grove in both of these genres.

Seven Millionth Article Added to EJC

The seven millionth journal article was recently added to OhioLINK’s award-winning Electronic Journal Center. The EJC provides students, faculty and staff at participating OhioLINK institutions with instantaneous online access to more than 6,900 journal titles from 90+ publishers.

OhioLINK users downloaded 4.81 million articles from the EJC annually. A total of 21.9 million articles have been downloaded from the EJC since its inception in April 1998.

More EJC stats may be found on the EJC Fast Facts page.

Tip: Try OhioLINK’s E-Journal Finder to see if OhioLINK offers a particular journal online. The OhioLINK E-Journal Finder searches the EJC and several other databases to help find desired journals. If you don’t find the journal in question using the E-Journal Finder, check with the Reference Center or call (216) 687-5300 as there may be other means of accessing the journal online.

Sherman Alexie to speak at CPL

A Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Indian, Sherman Alexie was raised on the reservation in Washington. His mother worked at the Wellpinit Trading Post where she sold her hand-sewn quilts. Alexie draws heavily upon those experiences for both his writing and his lectures, and does not shy away from including the despair, poverty and alcoholism that often pervade the lives of Native Americans living on reservations.

He will be speaking at Cleveland Public Library on Sunday November 18th at 2:00 P.M.

Spectrum: The Lockwood Thompson Dialogues--A Cleveland Public Library Event

Get in on the conversation on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. at Spectrum: The Lockwood Thompson Dialogues, a FREE and open to the public collaborative effort between the Cleveland Public Library and Cleveland Public Art. The event will be held at the Cleveland Public Theatre, 6415 Detroit Avenue, with a reception at 6:30 p.m. In its third year, Spectrum has brought influential and innovative thinkers in art and popular culture to talk about their work, ideas and theories.

This program engages the diverse Cleveland community in two public conversations per year and is supported by the Cleveland Public Library’s Lockwood Thompson Fund. The Spectrum 2007 series is Pen & Ink. Words and images have played a crucial role in storytelling and visual communication. Artists and writers continue to push in new directions while challenging the perceptions of high and low art, often with irreverence and commentary. The first dialogue will feature cartoonist and author Art Spiegelman, with host and moderator Michael Kimmelman, Chief Art Critic for the New York Times.

Art Spiegelman has almost single-handedly brought comic books out of the toy box and onto the literature shelves. He won the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for Maus and Maus II, the story of his parents’ survival of the Nazi regime and lives later in America. His work has been published in many periodicals, including The New Yorker. In 2004 he completed In the Shadow of Now Towers.

Moderator Michael Kimmelman, educated at Yale and Harvard, is the author of several acclaimed books, most recently The Accidental Masterpiece: On the Art of Life and Vice-Versa. He has written and hosted various television shows about the arts and is also a pianist. Seating is limited. RSVP by calling 216-621-5330 or e-mail contactus@clevelandpublicart.org by May 16. For more information, call 216-623-2869.

Sunday afternoon with Susan Orlean at CPL

Susan Orlean will appear as a part of CPL's "Sunday Afternoons for Writers and Readers" on November 27, 2005 at 2 p.m. in the Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium of the Main Library.

Born in Cleveland, Ms. Orlean has had a career as a writer that has taken her from the surf girls of Maui to the Florida swamps. Each topic she covers leaves the reader better informed and wanting more. The story of John Laroche and the culture that surrounds orchids, The Orchid Thief read like beautifully constructed fiction. The Orchid Thief was adapted into the film entitled Adaptation in 2002.
