Check out the new foreign language materials in the CPL@CSU collection. There is a collection of several audio CDs that will give you an introduction to different languages for your big trip or get you started on your goal. Languages include Spanish, French, German, Italian, Chinese, and Japanese.

The Chronicle of Higher Education’s current issues are now available online from anywhere on campus or off. You can connect through the Library’s Journal Finder or our catalog, Scholar, or go there directly with the link. You also might want to set up an RSS feed to be notified of availability of a new issue by clicking here. Older issues will continue to be available online through several of our EBSCO indexes, but current issues are embargoed for a month or so. The Chronicle is published every weekday and its Web site "features the complete contents of the latest issue; daily news and advice columns; thousands of current job listings; articles published since September 1989; vibrant discussion forums; and career-building tools such as an online CV's, salary databases, and more.”

The Current Periodicals and Master's Theses Have Moved

In order to improve convenience to our users, the Library has moved the Current Periodicals and Master's Theses. Previously located on the 3rd floor, the Current Periodicals have been relocated to the 4th floor and are shelved alphabetically by title with the Bound Periodicals. The Master's Theses have been moved to the west end of the 1st floor in the Library Commons.

Coming Soon: Be on the lookout for a new student study space on the 3rd floor where the periodicals and theses were located.

The Fire Inside: The Story and Poetry of Nikki Giovanni

Cleveland Public Library will host the debut stage reading of the Karamu House production of “The Fire Inside: The Story and Poetry of Nikki Giovanni,” on Saturday, February 17 at 3:00 p.m. in the Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium, the Main Library, 325 Superior Avenue.

Written by Susan Watson Turner and directed by Terrence Spivey, artistic director of Karamu, “The Fire Inside” presents an ensemble cast in a dramatization of the life and works of the dynamic African American poet. The script follows Giovanni’s career from her early years in the Black Arts Movement through her writing and life today.

The play will make its world debut in July at Cleveland’s annual Ingenuity Festival.

Giovanni was born in 1943 in Knoxville, Tennessee, but grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated with honors from Fisk University and has been on the faculty at Virginia Tech since 1987. Her fiery first book of poems, Black Feeling, Black Talk (1968) sold more than 10,000 copies. That book and others such as Re: Creation (1970), Poem of Angela Yvonne Davis (1970) and The Women and the Men (1975), comprised a powerful statement on African-American womanhood and established her as one of the leading figures of the Black Arts Movement

The First African-American Astronaut to Fly in Space, Dr. Guion S. Bluford Jr., will present

On Wednesday, November 18 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m., Dr. Guion S. Bluford, the First African-American Astronaut to fly in space, will present a free lecture on “Flying Aboard the International Space Station” in the Fenn Tower Ballroom (3rd floor). Dr. Bluford will discuss his experience in the astronaut program, the current space operations in support of the International Space Station, and the future of human space flight operations. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Refreshments will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Dr. Bluford is currently President of the Aerospace Technology Group, an engineering consulting organization in Cleveland. He is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Air Force.

This program is sponsored by NASA Glenn Research Center, The Cleveland State University’s Michael Schwartz Library, Fenn College of Engineering, College of Science, Office of Institutional Diversity, Provost’s Office, Career Services, and Amalgamated Tuna Company.

The HUGE Record Sale has been extended

The Friends of the Cleveland State University Library will continue their amazing vinyl record sale throughout the month of December. Browse through more than 5,000 LPs, mostly classical, that date from the mid-1950s to the mid-1980s. Major labels include Mercury Living Presence, RCA Red Seal (Shaded Dogs), Columbia Masterworks, and Philips. Records will sell for $1 each. The sale is located in Rhodes Tower, on the first floor of the Library, near the Circulation Desk.

The Life and Loves of the Marquis de Lafayette--A Friends of the Library Event

To honor the 250th anniversary of the birth of Marquis de Lafayette, Tama Engelking, Associate Professor of French at Cleveland State University will speak on "The Life and Loves of the Marquis de Lafayette." The Modern Language Association (MLA) International Bibliography has a new look!

OhioLINK is now making it available through the EBSCOhost interface. This makes it a lot easier to use, especially for students. Here’s a brief summary of the new enhancements:

-Default search is a “keyword” search.
-A superior display of “subject” terms and “General subject areas,” with cross-searching (clickable).
-Useful limits for Genre and Period
-Multiple-database searching is easy! Combine your search with any other EBSCO database, e.g. Academic Search Premier, American Humanities Index, or Religion and Philosophy Collection. (Select “Choose Database” option)
-The valuable MLA Directory of Periodicals is easily accessible. This Directory provides bibliographic identification for thousands of publications indexed by
MLA.

The Nance College of Business received the 2006 Governor’s Excellence in Exporting Award—on display now at the CSU Library

The Nance College of Business Administration at Cleveland State University was one of 29 companies and organizations honored with the Governor's Excellence in Exporting Award (“E” Award), presented by Governor Bob Taft. The award is now on display near the entrance of the Library.

“We’re very pleased to join the ranks of Ohio organizations that receive this distinguished honor,” said Robert Scherer, Ph.D., SPHR, Dean of the Nance College of Business. “Over the last three years, we have strategically focused our academic and outreach efforts on international trade issues to help improve the economy of our state. We’re delighted that our programs have generated such a positive response from both the business community and our students.”

The Veterans Memorial Bridge Book is Now on SALE

The Veterans Memorial Bridge Book
90th Anniversary Edition by William E. Beyer

The Veterans Memorial Bridge, formerly known as the Detroit-Superior of High Level Bridge, is an unusual and outstanding example of early twentieth-century bridge engineering. The double decked structure spans the Cuyahoga River Valley adjacent to downtown Cleveland, Ohio and consists of twelve concrete arch approach spans with lengths varying between 80 feet and 180 feet, and a 591-foot long steel arch main river span. The bridge was constructed as a replacement for the old Superior Viaduct, which spanned the Cuyahoga River immediately north of the Detroit-Superior Bridge. The upper deck of the structure was designed to carry highway and pedestrian traffic whereas the lower deck was designed for streetcar traffic. The approaches to the lower deck of the structure included subway tunnels and passenger stations for the streetcars. The first traffic crossed the upper deck of the new bridge in November 1917, and the first streetcars crossed the lower deck in December 1917.

The History of the Veterans Memorial Bridge: 90th Anniversary Edition by William Beyer documents the history of the original construction of the bridge and the two major rehabilitations—the first was done from 1967 to 1969 and the second was done from 1995 to 1997. Some technical information is included, which may be of interest to some readers. However, the major emphasis of the book is the documentation of the history of the bridge and the surrounding community with photographs. The photographs offer a unique opportunity to glimpse into previous eras in Cleveland. It is hoped that the reader will enjoy a journey through the planning, design, construction and rehabilitation of this structure—and develop an understanding and appreciation for the importance of maintaining and, whenever feasible, preserving notable structures such as the Detroit-Superior Bridge, which remain today.

The Writing Center has moved to the Library

The Writing Center, formerly located in Main Classroom 321, has moved to the library RT 105. The Writing Center provides assistance to all members of the university community, from first-year students to full professors. Through tutoring and workshops, the Writing Center can answer any questions about writing, including generating ideas, drafting and revising your papers, improving your writing style, and handling technical details of grammar, documentation, and formatting.

This Is MY OhioLINK Video Contest

As we celebrate OhioLINK’s 15th anniversary, we want to know what OhioLINK means to you, how it has helped you or how you’d explain OhioLINK to your peers. But don’t just tell us, show us, in five minutes or less, your OhioLINK story or commercial in a creative video and you could win a new digital video camera or a 160 GB iPod classic.

The Basics:
Current students, faculty and staff members at all 87 OhioLINK member institutions are welcome to submit one or more videos. Entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on January 18, 2008. A panel of judges will narrow the entries to three finalists, then your votes will determine the grand prize winner and runner up. The grand prize winner will receive his/her choice of a digital video camera or a new 160 GB iPod classic and the runner up will receive the remaining prize.

Through Students' Eyes — On Display in the Library

The Through Students' Eyes photography exhibit is on display now at the CSU Library. The photos were taken by several students from Lincoln-West High School in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood. These juniors and seniors snapped pictures with point-and-shoot cameras in the effort answer these questions: What purpose does school serve in your life? What pushes you away from school? What helps you achieve academically?

Each photo bears a caption such as “Teachers that Trust You”, “The Glue in my Life”, “Working Hard”, and “People From Different Backgrounds Come Together”, and each photo includes a short explanation of what the image means. Xidi Z. writes about his photo, Teachers That Trust You:

This is Tony “Fresh” Velez, and he is part of CCB (Cleveland City Breakers), a break dancing group, and he is also in drama club at Lincoln-West. The drama teacher lets him do his break dancing and plan all the dancing in school plays, even in the Christmas Carol play. Some teachers may not trust you enough to do that. But that's what keeps guys like him in school.

Don't miss this brief glimpse into the the live's of Cleveland's school children.

The Through Students' Eyes project was conceived by local educators and community activists:

• James Harmon is a veteran city teacher who was laid off recently from Lincoln-West, and now helps train new teachers at Cleveland State University.
• Kristien Marquez-Zenkov is a former teacher who directs an urban teaching program at Cleveland State University.
• Piet Van Lier is a reporter, photographer, and associate editor at Catalyst Cleveland.

Turning Darkness into Light: Pain, Bliss, Autism: A Special Common Reading Event Open to all CSU Faculty, Staff, and Students

To kick-off the spring Cleveland State University Common Reading Experience, featured speaker Debra Chwast will give her inspirational story of the challenges and joys of raising her son, Seth, who was diagnosed with autism as a young child and later discovers his talent to create beautiful, large oil paintings. Her presentation titled “Turning Darkness into Light: Pain, Bliss, Autism” will be held on Tuesday, February 19, at noon on the first floor of Library, located in Rhodes Tower. (POSTPONED FROM FEBRUARY 12 DUE TO BAD WEATHER)

The related painting exhibition titled “A Different Kind of Journey: The Paintings of Seth Chwast” will be on display on the first floor of the Library during the month of February.

The brown bag event is free and open to all CSU faculty, staff, and students and to the Cleveland Community.

Seth Chwast, who was diagnosed with autism as a very young child, has lived for years in a world of roller coasters, haunted houses, and classical music. A dramatic change came at age 20, when he took an oil painting class at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Seth, who rarely speaks but has a high non-verbal IQ, began describing his world in his paintings. It turned out that he has an innate ability to mix colors and create amazing, large oil paintings. Seth’s work was recently featured on NBC’s Today show and his art has been displayed in several exhibitions in the Cleveland area and is in art collections both in the Cleveland area and nationally.

Two Historical E-Books on Slavery Now Available

Two historical electronic books from the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center are now freely available to anyone online at http://rave.ohiolink.edu/ebooks/nurfc.

The two titles in this collection are: “Letters on American Slavery” (1833), by John Rankin and “A Portraiture of Domestic Slavery in the United States” (1817), by Jesse Torrey.
